at how tradition shapes

Assignment 1

Let’s take a look at how tradition shapes what we expect in public life.

This presidential election year has been historic, and the country remains divided as ever about the outcome. In the magazine The Atlantic, writer Peter Reinart speculates whether Hillary Clinton as president would inspire a backlash (this was written about a month before the election, and Reinert writes as if Clinton would win). Take a look at the article here (right click and open the link in a new tab);

What do you think? Is Reinert correct? Do you think that we tend to dislike it when women are our bosses or gain power? Why or why not?

Assignment 2

Let’s continue our look at gender issues in the workplace.

In 2010, a Muslim woman sued her employer, Disneyland, over whether she could wear her headscarf while on duty.  Take a look at the article here (right click to open the link in a new tab):

Does Disneyland have the right to dictate a dress code? Or are they practicing discrimination?  What is your opinion?  Do we respect these choices?  Or do we try to stop some practices when people from different cultures come to the US?
