Title: The effects of socioeconomic status on students’ performance in school.

Background: Socioeconomic status is a measure of an individual or families’ economic and social position based on education, income, and occupation. Research has been conducted to identify issues in relation to a student’s socioeconomic status that can cause an effect on their academic performance.

Thesis: Through the different observation in the relationships of students with diverse backgrounds, the students in 9-12 grade of a lower economic status are often faced with multiple societal barriers then students of higher socioeconomic status based on their academic performance.

Introduction: The different societal barriers students of low socioeconomic status face are, the lack of resources, the school environment, and also the slower rate process of academic achievement. These societal barriers can cause a major impact the future generation for developing successful young adults. Taking the step to assist this problem is to easily solve it through dialogue. Having dialogues can be the initial step to take to help improve these societal barriers by conducting community committees, and starting an intervention program with a small group.

· Obtaining responsibilities for creating new ideas to have better financial resources

· Devoting time to the committee that leads to a better outcome

II. The school environment for students of low socioeconomic status vs. the school environment for students of high socioeconomic status

· Teacher Turnover

Teachers in different school districts vary from:

1. Highly-Qualified teachers

2. Commitment (short vs. long period of time)

3. Experience (beginner vs. 10+ years)

· Talking about the improvement in teaching and learning

The socioeconomic status of students’ with higher or lower levels, can lead to improvement by overcoming the societal barriers through the common method of dialogue. It is a useful tool for parents and teachers to use to prevent the mistakes in the future that are present for the low socioeconomic status students. The challenges that are up against the lower socioeconomic students are up to parents and education leaders to make in impact in society together. By working together, being dedicated individuals, and also putting in the time and effort can make an increasing change to the societal barriers students face in today’s education system.
