effort teachers put into their career

What I have noticed about this particular industry is that it the society does not really appreciate the effort teachers put into their career. Many are the cases we have heard regarding the poor pay that teachers get. Many are also the time when there has been teachers’ strike, especially in African countries. Imagine yourself waking up earlier than other individuals, say, 4am, preparing yourself while taking breakfast. You then go to the bus-stop to wait for the 7am bus, which will drop you off at the school gate, 15 minutes before time. In the course of your day, you have a hectic time where you have to handle hyper-active school kids, practically draining you of whatever energy you have left. You leave to go back home at around 6pm, because you had to sit it out with a bunch of children in detention, who misbehaved. You take the bus back home and by the time you arrive, you are too tired to even prepare a quick decent meal for yourself. You want to give up thinking that tomorrow will be the same thing all over again. To make matter worse, you are earning peanuts that can barely pay your rent!

I have just described a typical day in a teacher’s life. I am sure some of you are already questioning why I still want to become a teacher if that is what I will be experiencing on a daily basis. Well, despite all that, being a teacher can be quite fulfilling. To begin with, you are the one charged with the responsibility of instilling knowledge into young minds. It is up to you to mould those young minds into something that can be useful and well respected in future. That fact alone gives you the satisfaction of your job. If I get to be a teacher, I will ensure I fight for teachers’ rights where they can earn a higher percentage with regards to their salaries and wages. I would also encourage part-time teaching where employment can be created for other aspiring teachers who have also graduated.

I intend to become an elementary teacher as compared to teaching high school students. Recent studies have indicated that young children tend to grasp information quickly where they are able to apply their cognitive capabilities in making decisions in the course of their lives (DuPlass, 2010). Young minds are also keen to learn and therefore more inquisitive. That is perhaps why young children, especially elementary students tend to enjoy going to school as compared to their high school counterparts. If I achieve my dream, becoming a teacher will be the most fulfilling and the most satisfying thing ever!

Today, we have looked at a job field that I may wish to enter someday. We have also looked at some of the issues teachers face in their daily lives with regards to their career. This particular topic can be used as a platform for promoting something God values in the world. Keeping in mind that it is your responsibility to mould young minds, it will also be your responsibility to ensure that you instill godly values in them. Such values they are sure to carry for the rest of their lives. I am sure many of you can relate to situations where later on in adulthood, you have remembered a significant statement or moment by a past school teacher that made sense, and would apply to your current situation. Yes, it can be quite hectic and frustrating to some point. However, being a teacher means you not only possess a wide knowledge of different subject matter, but that you can also enlighten and mould future generations
