Essay Prompt II Survey

Essay Prompt II Survey of Central American Literature For your second essay, you are free to write on any literary device utilized by Horacio Castellanos Moya in Revulsion: Thomas Bernhard in San Salvador and/or Marco Antonio Flores in “The Lad, 1966.”* You should identify the literary device that you will be analyzing and explain how it functions in the text(s). You are free to choose any literary device such as metaphor, simile, hyperbole, indirect interior monologue, free association (interior monologue and free association together is stream-of- consciousness), or first-person monologue, as well as any other literary device that you find in those texts. Please keep in mind that you are to analyze only one literary technique. For example, if you choose to analyze how Castellanos Moya utilizes metaphor in Revulsion: Thomas Bernhard in San Salvador, you should not include an analysis of how he utilizes simile as well. You should only focus in how he utilizes metaphor.** You should write three pages, and it should be MLA formatted. Please note that all of you should have an MLA book, since you are forced to buy it when you take your first year writing courses such as 113A/B, 114A/B, or 115. Make use of it. I have already put up the link on Moodle for you to upload it to our Turn- It-In link before we meet next Wednesday. Please bring a stapled, hard-copy to class on that day. If you need to discuss any of these techniques with me, please email me and we can set up a time to meet on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. *Note: You may choose to only write on Castellanos Moya’s Revulsion: Thomas Bernhard in San Salvador or on both Revulsion and Flores’s “The Lad, 1966.” **Note: You are only to analyze one literary technique, yet that should not present a problem for any of you, because each literary technique provides plenty of material for you to analyze. For example, if you choose to analyze how Castellanos Moya utilizes metaphor, you have plenty of metaphors to choose from. In fact, to continue with the example of Castellanos Moya and metaphor, you would still have to choose carefully which metaphors you would want to analyze. In case you want to analyze stream-of- consciousness, I want you to choose on either the indirect interior monologue or free association.
