This assignment is 2 parts.

Part 1

Read both assigned short stories carefully. Notice how the stories revolve around the theme of female identity and experience in 19th century USA.

For your discussion post this week, share your thoughts on how this theme comes out in one of the stories. (Pick your favorite one!) How do various elements of fiction (plot, point of view, character) contribute to this theme? Also, how do the women in the story compare to women today? Work to make your initial discussion post thoughtful and detailed, and respond to another student with the same careful thought and specifics.

Part 2

  1. Use the short story from Part 1 that you picked.
  2. Use your Online Library resources to research a minimum of 3 academic sources that contain relevant and detailed information about your chosen author. If possible, try to locate material that discusses the sample story you read in the text. (This may not be available.) Need help? Check with your instructor. Also, remember that you can access the Online Library through the Resources tab.
  3. Now write a 2-3 page essay in a Word document in which you:
    • Summarize the information from your researched sources that you think is most crucial for understanding your chosen author and the central concerns you detected in her/his work.
    • Review how this information can be used to underline the theme of 19th century women in your chosen story.

4. APA format. Cite sources within the paper.
