Language Acquisition in Kindergarteners

In this week’s reading, you learned about the practice of reading aloud to children in promoting language acquisition. Additionally, you read about how the early childhood professional can promote language acquisition and development in kindergarten-aged children through an understanding of semantic and phonetic knowledge. Based on your reading, please respond to the following:
  • After reading the information in your text and the article, “Vocabulary development during Read-Alouds: Examining the Instructional Sequence” by Karen J. Kindle, please imagine that a parent has questioned this practice and you need to explain and defend the practice of using read alouds with kindergarten aged children to the questioning parent. How has thinking about this imaginary scenario prepared you to deal with a variety of parental responses?
  • Compose an imaginary conversation with a kindergartener about a topic of your choice.
    1. Your conversation should be supportive of the kindergartener’s acquisition of vocabulary and figurative language skills. Your use of verbal mapping and mediation strategies should be demonstrated in the imaginary conversation. After completing your imaginary conversation, please use specific vocabulary to discuss the child’s development of semantic and phonetic knowledge as demonstrated in this conversation.

The kindergartener is developing writing skills . Review these writing samples to see the skill levels of kindergarteners participating in a Writer’s Workshop:

  • Select and identify one of the samples (1–5) and analyze the type of language knowledge that the child demonstrated during this writing activity. Your discussion should include vocabulary that identifies and explains the phonetic, semantic, syntactic, morphemic, or pragmatic knowledge that the child has demonstrated during this activity.
