Q1: Imagination vs. Performance: After both reading the play and seeing the live performance, consider the differences of these experiences. What stood out to you as especially different between the two? Which did you prefer and why? Or, if you enjoyed both equally, what about each did you enjoy? Make a unique claim about the experiences. Choose at least one particular scene or aspect of the play to demonstrate and defend your argument.

 

Q2: Change over Time: Consider the way the characters’ concept of romantic love changes throughout the play. Choose one character and chart the shifts in how that character views and treats the concept of romantic love throughout the whole play. How does the dynamic and their actions change throughout each scene and why do these changes occur? What does the way in which your chosen character treats romantic love show us about them as an individual and what does it say about us as human beings generally? Make a unique claim and defend your argument using evidence from the text.

 

Q3: The Wall: Consider the role and character of “The Wall” in the play. Near the end of the play, in Act II (pp. 109), the following exchange takes place:

BELL: It’s a miracle. Let’s take down the wall.

EL GALLO: No. Leave the wall.

Why does El Gallo say this? What does he mean by it? What might “The Wall” represent as a symbol or metaphor—or is it doing something else literarily? Make a claim regarding what “The Wall” might represent and its role in the play. Defend your argument using thorough evidence from the text.
