·                     Deities

In art, gods and goddesses were depicted as humans, animals, or as humans with animal heads. They were further identified by emblematic headdresses and they held in their hands a variety of scepters and the ankh, the hieroglyphic sign for life.

Use the provided links and select one of the major deities listed.  Then post a discussion board essay in YOUR OWN WORDS summarizing information about your selection.  Include information such as when the deity was worshipped, which cities were dedicated to them, what they were the god or goddess of, what their animal form is, etc.

Besides information in our text, here are some other links to get you started.

  • SECOND ASSIGNMENT
  • Ancient Art: Tombs and Treasure

Animals and Deities

As we’ve studied, animals were very important to ancient Egyptians – some were considered sacred, while others were used for farming or other domesticated activities.  Choose one animal listed below and post a discussion board essay about the animal’s purpose in ancient Egyptian art.  IN YOUR OWN WORDS, describe what the animal represented, where they would be depicted in art scenes, what deity it was associated with (if any), etc.  This post should be two paragraphs minimum.

·                     Burial Art

Ancient Egyptian tombs contained art to help the soul transition from Life to Death and to help the deceased navigate the Underworld. Great care was taken to preserve the body for the journey into the Underworld.  Compare and contrast modern day examples of burial art to that of the Ancient Egyptians.  What are the similarities and what are the differences?

Students should make every effort to demonstrate in their responses that they have understood the assigned readings. Responses to peers should also be substantial and contribute to the discussion of the topic.

This video is related to the discussion topic. Watch at your leisure. I hope you enjoy it.
