Learning Activities

Teaching young children English can be fun and challenging as the children need to learn how to focus their energy on the English lesson. I will incorporate a lot of songs, games, dances, visuals, movement, and flashcards to enhance the learning process. I will use a number of learning activities such as book reading, writing, coloring, drawing and singing for the English lesson.

Writing

I will teach my students how to write alphabetical letters and their sounds and numbers. I will use Alphabet Books and Alphabet crafts to make their writing experience fun. Once they know how to write the alphabet and numbers, I will begin utilizing natural settings for letter identification and incorporate multiple domains of development that will enhance letter recognition and reading skills. This will help them write their names, names of animals, and dates among others. Writing English is one of my key learning goals and is inline with my assessments of determining my students learning progress. I will use both formal and summative assessment to determine whether or not my students are acquiring writing skills and knowledge that will help them in spelling and construction of sentences with time. For instance, I will ask my students to stick letters from a box of cut letters on a block during the lesson to track their progress on letter identification

Book Reading

I will read interesting books to the young children and ask them questions while reading to encourage my students to interact with the book as well as develop their ability to comprehend what they are reading. I will ask them to point to things in the book and make noises of the animals they see. This will help to develop their reading skills and vocabulary which is among my learning goals. I will use formal assessment to determine my student’s ability to comprehend and use of vocabulary. I will ask questions before reading a book to allow my students to predict, during to connect, and after to summarize the happenings in the book. This will help determine whether or not the students were attentive or listening during the lesson. Book reading is inline with my reading goals and assessments to determine my students ongoing progress in reading and listening.

Drawing and Coloring

Young children like to draw and color. I will encourage my students to draw pictures and color them accordingly. I will encourage them to associate letter sounds with words and draw the words and color them. For example, A for Apple and B for Ball where they will draw and apple and a ball and then color them. This will help in reading and writing that are my key learning goals. I will evaluate my students progress on their reading and writing skills using both formal and summative assessments. These assessments will determine what the students have mastered and allow me to make adjustments of their learning process accordingly.

Playing and Singing

I will play rhyming games with my students to build phonemic awareness. I will teach them songs accompanied by actions to enhance their vocabulary and help them absorb English language. I will engage them in physical activities like jumping, hopping, waving and clapping while they sing songs like the ABC song and the Let’s Count 1 to 10 songs to make learning fun. We will play games like passing objects around as we name them to enhance speaking and vocabulary.

Teachers need to facilitate the learning process of young children by engaging the little ones in a number of ways. Playing games, singing, coloring, storytelling, and book reading are some learning activities that make learning English fun. Songs are very effective in teaching young English learners.
