“man was born free, and everywhere he is in chains”- this powerful statement by Rousseau is the opening of his famous reatise “The Social Contract(1762)” in which he explores issues of legitimate and illegitimate political authority. He argues that the divine authority asserted my European monarchy was in fact illegitimate. And the only legitimate authority was the” Social Contract” agreed upon by citizen with the state for the mutual benefit.
