Gender Based Violence in the US

First, what’s gender based violence? Gender-based violence’ and ‘violence against women’ are terms that are often used interchangeably as most gender-based violence is inflicted by men on women and girls. However, it is important to retain the ‘gender-based’ aspect of the concept as this highlights the fact that violence against women is an expression of power inequalities between women and men. Gender based violence happens all over the world. Especially in Africa, women and girls have a lower social status. Women get less education and social care, some of them even experienced sexual assault, rape… But, as we are in this very developing and higher level of education country I want to talk this social issue all over the US.

In the United States, gender based violence is also a big social issue and it’s increasing. There was a case that happened in Santa Barbara California, Rodger a student in UCSB, he killed seven people, including his own with several more injured. He killed two women outside a sorority house, but according to Rodger himself he had planned to “slaughter” several more. Although Rodger is obviously an extreme case, his sense of male sexual entitlement resonated widely with women. This news became famous in Tweeter and lots of women and girls shared experiences and stories in this social media.

According to the article “1 in 4Women Experience Sex Assault on Campus” which was posted by Richard Perez-Pena on New York Times website, he mentioned that in four years of college, more than one-fourth of undergraduate women at a large group of leading universities had been sexually assaulted by force or when they were incapacitated. According to 27.2 percent of female college seniors reported that, “since entering college, they had experienced some kind of unwanted sexual contact — anything from touching to rape — carried out by incapacitation, usually due to alcohol or drugs, or by force. Nearly half of those, 13.5 percent, had experienced penetration, attempted penetration or oral sex.”(Ricahrd Perez-pena)

There is an article called “Incapacitated Rape is a big problem” was posted by Jeff Nesbit on US news, he was the National Science Foundation’s director of legislative and public affairs in the Bush and Obama administrations. Many women who were raped while incapacitated reported having been assaulted previously as well. During their freshmen year, 15 percent of women are raped while incapacitated from alcohol or drugs. “Freshmen women who’d been victims of such assaults before college were at substantial risk of being victimized again, 18 percent of students said they’d been raped while incapacitated before college, and 41 percent of those young women were raped again while incapacitated during their freshman year.”( Jefff Nebist)

I also found some some statistic information of gender based violence online. All the women were murdered in the U.S, about one-third were killed by an intimate partner. By looking at the reports of National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, women experience about 4.8 million intimate partner-related physical assaults and rapes every year. Knowing from the National Crime Victimization Survey, 232,960 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted in 2006. (Bureau of Justice Statistics) In 2010, Over 22 million women in the United States have been raped in their lifetime. (National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey 2010). By looking at the statistic reports, from 2005 to 2010 the facts of violence towards women has increased.

Moreover, the attitude of women themselves is very important. They are the people need to pay attention to the social awareness and speak out for themselves. Woman who experience violence treatments may sustain injuries such as cuts, scratches and bruises. “They may even end up suffering from more complicated injuries such as internal bleeding, broken bones and so on. Violence against women can also lead to emotional problems or mental disorders.”(Ayotunde, Titiyao et al) By looking at the number of studies have shown that women’s attitude towards wife-beating, could depending where are they live. Such as the level of education or the region they live. Normally, in Africa, beating of wives was culturally accepted as a chronic thing.

However, gender based violence never ends in this society. The society should bring awareness to this problem. Men should really think this problem seriously. Stop raping, stop sexual assault, and stop gender based violence in order to make the world better and equality is important.
