Examine the importance of architecture of Bramante and evaluate how his architecture represents the attitudes and aesthetics of the High Renaissance. Your paper must be at least four pages long and you must use five works to support your analysis. Contrast Tintoretto’s The Last Supper with Leonardo’s Last Supper. In your post, include the differences in media as well as thematic substance. Use one example from Gardner’s Art through the Ages and one from the Internet.

 Contrast The Elevation of the Cross by Rubens with Rembrandt’s Return of the Prodigal Son. Explain how each work reflects the artist and his temperament. How does each work mirror sociopolitical environment of each artist? Use one example from Gardner’s Art through the Ages and one from the Internet.

Review the Final Research Paper instructions found in Week Five of the online course. This assignment is designed to prompt you to begin the work for the Final. Please be aware that requirements for the Final are greater than those of this assignment.

Select a topic from the following:

1) Evaluate the representation of Bernini’s David. How has it evolved from the earlier works of Donatello, Verrocchio, and Michelangelo? How does it mirror the Counter-Reformation efforts of the Catholic Church?

2) Compare David’s Oath of the Horatti and the Coronation of Napoleon. How does each work relate to the sociopolitical climate of the period? What devices does the artist employ in each work? Are the works successful in describing the event and the political moment?

3) Contrast the portrait styles of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, and Jean Fouquet. How does each artist address the concept of portraiture? Use examples to support your claims.

4) Evaluate Pablo Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon. How did this work reshape the art of the early 20th century? Also address the influences coming from Primitive art. Use examples to support your claims.

5) Contrast three works of da Vinci with three of Michelangelo. How did the two artists influence the art of the 16th century in Italy and Europe? Use examples to support you claims.

Discussion 1:  Impact of Photography on Landscape Art

 Assess the impact of photography on the 19th century political and social landscape. How did it affect paintings?  Use one example from Gardner’s Art through the Ages and one from the Internet.

Discussion 2:  Olympia and Ophelia and the Artists’ Reflections

Compare Manet’s Olympia to Millais’s Ophelia. Discuss how each work represents the artist and his period. Use one example from Gardner’s Art through the Ages and one from the Internet.

Week 5: Due 5/16

Discussion Questions:

Discussion 1:  Art as a Vehicle for Propaganda

Discuss how art was used as a vehicle for propaganda, and whether such use is present in the works of Höch, Grosz, and Picasso. Use one example from Gardner’s Art through the Ages and one from the Internet.

Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. Properly cite any references used to support your claims. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

Final Research Paper

The purpose of the Final Research Paper is to provide you with an opportunity to investigate a specific topic in art from the 13th century to modern times

Using the Topic selected in Week 3:

The Final Research Paper must be ten to twelve pages in length. In addition to the course text, you must use at least five scholarly resources to support your thesis. All sources must be properly cited, and the Final Paper must ten to twelve pages in length and formatted according the APA (6th edition) style.

Writing the Final Research Paper

The Final Research Paper:

Must be ten to twelve double-spaced pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA (6th ed.) style as outlined in the approved style guide.

Must address one of the topics found in Final Paper guidelines.

Must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement.

Must conclude with a restatement of the thesis and a conclusion paragraph.

Must use APA (6th ed.) style as outlined in the approved APA style guide to document all sources.

 

Must include a Reference Page that is completed according to APA (6th ed.) style as outlined in the approved APA style guide.
