Essay #2: Speculating About Causes

After reading and evaluating the events in Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, write an essay speculating about what might have caused the Los Angeles riots (that is if you consider them riots – you may use another term as long as you explain your terminology). Your argument will focus on developing one of the several causes you discuss as being the “main” or “hidden” cause of the events that occurred in April 1992.

Begin this paper by describing the subject (the riots)- that will be the basis for speculation. This can occupy up to one page of the total paper length, as it must be thorough. The causes that are going to be described must arise logically from this discussion. Then the causes are presented and argued. Examples, facts, statistics, and anecdotes may be used to show support for the chosen cause, and also to prove how wrong the other causes presented might be. Readers’ objections must be anticipated and met as part of this paper. The argumentation will be like that in a position paper – the opposition’s arguments will be refuted, acknowledged, or accommodated. The alternative causes and the objections to the chosen causes will be refuted.

Requirements: Your essay should be 5-6 pages in length, have a clever title, use MLA format, with a clear, debatable thesis, well-developed analytical paragraphs, an introduction, conclusion, and attention to counterarguments. You must use 4-5 credible sources for this essay. One of your sources must be Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 (cite at least two monologues).

In short, to pass this essay you must:

· Speculate about possible causes for the event. Of the several causes you identify, choose ONE to be the main focus of your essay and defend your claims with solid reasoning and examples.

· Address and refute counterarguments (those who think your “main” cause is not a plausible cause for the riot, or that it isn’t the most important).

· Use clear and effective organization; it will be crucial in this essay.

· Adhere to length and format guidelines

· Use MLA formatting and citations throughout your essay (see MLA sample papers and guidelines on Blackboard)

· Have a properly constructed Works Cited page

Common Problems to Avoid

Suggesting causes that are not probable or even possible Presenting several causes, but not making clear which cause is most important Presenting an underdeveloped topic – in other words, you must have a paragraph that describes/discusses the riots. Organizing the essay illogically or incompletely Failing to address counterarguments
