The Laramie Project – Film Elements

For this week’s whole-class discussion, please consider the following aspects of theatrical and/or film drama:

1. Character Analysis – Characters defined by narration, dialogue, dialect, speech patterns, idiosyncrasies (subtext), mannerisms, silence, costumes, props, and staging (or camera angles).

2. Conflict and Resolution – Use of dramatic questions. These serve as dramatic hooks, devices to hold the attention of the audience for several hours.

3. Subdivisions – Scene, Act Construction – effect on plot pace, tempo, staging, tension, climax. For theater, the visual/audio production as stated in the stage direction for theater (staging, lighting, backdrop, sound effects, music, etc.).

4. Themes and Visual Symbols – Can be portrayed through costumes, action, props, staging, set design, sound effects, musical score, as well as dialogue and narration.
