 The seven characteristics of naturalism are:  General characteristics of naturalism, as seen in Thrall, Hibbard and Holman’s A Handbook to Literature, include the following:  1. Biological determinism with emphasis on animal nature of  human beings, particularly heredity, and portraying them as  animals in a struggle for survival. 2. Socio-economic determinism with human beings seen as victims of environmental forces and products of social and economic factors beyond their control or full understanding. 3. Naturalistic attempt to be objective, even documentary. 4. Amoral in view, neither condemning nor praising humanity. 5. Pessimistic in view of human capabilities—life is a vicious trap,  a cruel game. 6. Frank and direct in portrayal of human beings as animals driven by fundamental urges—fear, hunger, sex. 7.
