Drama Paper: The Tragic Hero

Assignment

Discuss the character of Oedipus in Oedipus Rex as a tragic hero in an argumentative paper following all guidelines below. Length should be 3 or more pages (including the works cited page). I have posted notes in the “Content” section of BB to guide your thoughts.

Procedure

1. Complete the reading of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles.

2. Read your notes and handouts.

3. Use evidence (specific references and quotes from the play) to support your statements.

4. To cite quotes from the play, use a citation such as (118) or (118-121) , if you refer to more than one line, to indicate the line(s) from the play.

5. Use at least one critical essay as a source from the AVL in the preparation of your essay.

6. Include a works cited page at the end of your essay.

Structure (suggested)

Intro paragraph Define the tragic hero, according to Arp and Johnson which is your text book. Then in a thesis, state your position that Oedipus does/does not qualify as a tragic hero.

Body paragraphs Provide evidence in the form of specific examples, quotes, etc., from the play to support your position.

Concluding paragraph Restate theme and summarize evidence

Evaluation

1. Paper will count 100 points.

2. Papers will be graded holistically – grammar and content analyzation

3. Paper will be evaluated on the following:

a. content accuracy & specificity, organization, and thoroughness

b. grammar, style, and mechanics—remember: commas spices, fragments, run-ons = 5 points each.
