The Transcendentalist movement

The Transcendentalist movement originated in the early-to-mid 19th century, but remains strong today in the hearts of many poets, teachers, writers, and literary scholars. The movie “Dead Poets Society” presents an argument between romanticism and realism.

Rent the movie “Dead Poets Society.” As you watch the film, listen for the poets and poetry you have read in the Module 2 Readings. Consider how and to what degree the key characters do or do not embody the qualities of Transcendentalism.

Write a 750-1,000-word essay that compares and contrasts one character from the movie with one of the transcendentalist authors we have studied this week. Describe both the chosen author and the chosen character. Answer the following questions:

1. How are the two alike?

2. How are they different?

3. In what ways does each embody the characteristics of Transcendentalism?
