Textbook: “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”

Minimum of 1 peer-reviewed library resource for initial post

Introduction

Gabriel García Márquez uses magical realism in his short stories to blend reality and fantasy so there is no distinction between the two. In, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” Márquez shows the audience how to tell a fairytale or folk tale in a truthful manner while including the “magic” of angels.

Initial Post Instructions

The word, “allegories,” in the headnote presents a challenge to you, as the reader of this story. Like the crabs that come into the house from some alien realm, the “flesh-and-blood angel” constitutes an intrusion of sorts – something strange and unfathomable into a world of comfort, a world of reality. No individual in the story can quite “define” the winged visitor.

Is Márquez’s fallen angel a fairytale, a myth, or an allegory? When answering, make sure to use specific illustrations from the text to support your answer.
