SELECT A TOPIC FOR YOUR RESEARCH PAPER

· Below are listed options for your research paper.

· For more information about how to go about planning, developing, incorporating research, documenting research, and drafting this essay see pp. 1258+ and read the sample essay on p. 1291.

TOPICS: keep in mind the suggestions for approaches following the stories are, in fact only suggestions. You can develop any thesis you believe is relevant and worth exploring.

Option 1: “Cathedral” Develop an essay in which you explore the narrator’s evolution from a person who either can’t or chooses not to see into a person who can or is more willing to see. Discuss this evolution in terms of characters, symbolism, conflict, antagonist and protagonist. You can discuss any elements of fiction beyond those listed to advance your ideas. Support with textual evidence will be most effective.

Option 2: “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” Develop an essay that analyzes the characters–The Misfit and The Grandmother–and that focuses on the relationship between these two characters. In this essay you should also examine how this relationship addresses O’Connor’s ideas about Grace.

Option 4: “Story of an Hour” Ultimately, your essay should serve to support a theme related to Chopin’s ideas regarding marital relationships as expressed in “Story of an Hour.” An exploration about how Chopin uses this story to examine the marital roles of men and women will help develop and support your theme. This essay should also include some discussion of the power relationships between men and women in the context of the setting of the story. Be sure to use any elements of fiction that you believe will help support your ideas.

Guidelines:

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Overview: An annotated bibliography can take on various forms according to the instructor or the discipline. For ENG 102 the annotated bibliography consists of summaries of each of your sources for the Final Research Project. A summary (annotation) is a brief yet accurate representation of the author’s main idea (thesis) and his or her key supporting ideas. The bulk of the summary needs to be in your own words, but if you use key words or phrases from the original article, you should put these in quotation marks. A summary must be objective: your opinion about the essay is irrelevant and should not be discussed in the summary. The only subjective (opinion) element of this assignment is the part where you briefly discuss one thing you learned from the article you summarized.

.

Once you’ve decided on the story on which you will focus the research essay, you need to begin your research.
The results of your research should include at least four sources from the CC Databases.
The sources can deal with criticism, analysis, or commentary. Sometimes biographical sources related to the author can be useful.
The content of each annotation must include:
Full MLA bibliographic citation for each source
Summary of author’s main idea and key supporting points
Discussion of one thing you learned from the article
Each annotation should be at least 10 lines, single-spaced.
You will be using the results of your research to develop a researched literature essay that will be due along with this annotated bibliography at the end of the semester.
Below is a sample annotated bibliography entry. It is color coded so you can see the parts (you don’t need to color code your entries.) You must have at least four summaries in your annotated bibliography

Sample Annotated Bibliography: MLA bibliographic citation; green = general overview of author’s topic; blue=author’s thesis or main idea about the topic; yellow=summary of author’s key supporting ideas; gray=what you learned

Deneau, Daniel P. “Chopin’s THE STORY OF AN HOUR.” Explicator 61

(2003): 210-14. Academic Search Elite. Web 08 April 2008

Deneau focuses on the major issue most readers of “Story of an Hour” continually debate. Is Mrs. Mallard a sympathetic woman, trapped in an unwanted marriage whose reaction is normal, or is she a selfish woman who is only concerned about her own well-being.? He suggests that the answer is unclear because of the mysterious “it” (paragraph 9). This “it”, repeated numerous times in the passage is a mystery. Deneau characterizes “it” as a “powerful force” or something “supernatural” that possesses her. It is something she can’t fight even though she tried. Deneau suggests that “it” is like rape because she is powerless and she feared it and it possessed her. He points out that the confusing part of the passage that is the cause of the debate about Mrs. Mallard’s motives is mainly because of the conflicting nature of the above mentioned passage. The passage is about “fear, force and sex” while at the same time being about “anticipation, pleasure, and ultimately enlightenment:” certainly a paradoxical passage. It is the conflict, paradox, or uncertainty of this passage that leads to the familiar debate that arises about this story. I learned that the passage that Deneau points out is significant because it doesn’t give an answer to Mrs. Mallard’s motivation. If anything, it suggests that she was motivated by a combination of emotions that were very powerful.
