the opportunity to practice

Assignment 2: Literary Analysis

This week you will have the opportunity to practice the skills of finding peer-reviewed sources and integrating material from these secondary (outside) sources into your writing.

First, go to the South University Online Library and find at least one credible, peer-reviewed scholarly source that relates to your essay comparing The Odyssey and one of the following texts:

· The Song of Roland

· Dante’s Inferno

Ideally, these sources will support the argument that you developed in your essay for W4: Assignment 2.

Next, retrieve the essay you submitted to the W4: Assignment 2 Dropbox, along with the feedback about it that you received from your instructor. Open a new Word document and copy and paste only the introduction of the W4: Assignment 2essay onto it. Decide whether to revise the introduction based on feedback from your instructor and/or additional ideas that you might have had since you first wrote it. Go ahead and make any revisions you consider necessary.

After that, or if you do not wish to revise the introduction, copy and paste the next paragraph to your document, review it and revise as necessary, substantiating and reinforcing (when necessary and appropriate) your argument with quotes, paraphrases, or summaries from the peer-reviewed source that you retrieved from the library. Remember that quoted material should not exceed 25% of the essay.

Repeat this process with all the essay’s paragraphs up through the conclusion. After incorporating scholarly material into your paper, it should be between 1,000 to 1,200 words long.

Now that you have copied, pasted, and revised all the essay’s paragraphs, go over the paper to determine if it is properly formatted in APA style (from start to finish) and includes in-text and reference list citations, which also should be formatted in APA style. Next, use the spell-check tool in Microsoft Word to identify misspellings. Finally, read through the essay one last time, looking for typos and glitches that spell check might have missed.

This handout will help guide you in formatting your essay using APA style. You may create your essay in this APA-formatted template.

This is the essay you wrote me in week 4 and the comments the teacher made. I made a 96 on that one.

Good survey of instances of loyalty and betrayal in both works, but absence of Ganelon’s betrayal in The Song of Roland is a problem (you need to add that to your revision of this paper next week).

Loyalty and betrayal are two virtues that exist on different sides when it comes to trust. The song of Roland dicusses the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. It also has some courageous features of the Odyssey. Most of the early works or poetry and literature depicted these two virtues rather vividly. What we see in these works of literature is loyalty that runs in the family but is broken by one of its members because of either greed or jealousy. Such virtues as loyalty or betrayal were reflected by authors in their literature works mostly because of what they had seen or experienced. This means that they often would shed light on how the society was at their time. I will discuss the moral and practical implication of loyalty and betrayal and how it is reflected in The Odyssey and The Song of Roland which are very remarkable works of literature I have had the pleasure of studying.

Loyalty in The Odyssey is first portrayed by Eurycleia who is Odysseus old nurse. She remains loyal to Odysseus, his wife Penelope and the whole household even in the absence of Odysseus by protecting his possessions and family. Eurycleia’s loyalty can also be seen in her love for Telemachus, whom she treats like her own son (Homer, 2000). Her loyalty is clearly below,

“So he uttered and the dear nurse Eurykleia cried out while lamenting bitterly … ‘my beloved child, why has this intention come into your mind and why do you wish to wander … an only and loved son? Odysseus has perished far from his country in some outlandish region. But these men will plot evils against you ….It is not right for you to wander and suffer hardships on the barren wide sea.’ ”

Penelope has been faithful to Odysseus for over 20 years. This shows loyalty as she waits for him to return. Since she is Odysseus’s wife, she endures the 20 years while persevering the aggressiveness of the suitor who want her hand in marriage. The suitors are aggressive because they think that Odysseus will not return home because he is either lost or dead and also giving the fact that he is king therefore they want to overthrow him (Mucci, T., Caldwell, B., & H., 2009). Penelope dodges them by playing them against each other just to avoid them. She says,

“I have taken to my bed, my throbbing heart, about to break, anxieties swarming, piercing… I might go mad with grief”

In the Song of Roland, loyalty is also portrayed where a vassal would give his total loyalty to a lord in exchange for protection and revenge in case the vassal was killed. In The Song of Roland, vassalage can be seen to resemble Christianity where Roland’s supreme liege lord is God and by serving his lord he fulfills the roles of a Christian (Merwin, W. S., & Clermont-Ferrand, M., 2001). Therefore the loyalty runs both ways. Another form of loyalty in The Song of Roland is portrayed by Turpin who is and Archbishop who serves the king and emperor. When Turpin feels that he is close to death the says the following words,

“My own death causes me great pain, for I might not see the mighty emperor”

The suitors who are after Penelope’s hand in marriage show a great deal of betrayal. Considering that Odysseus is their King which means that they should be loyal to him and his rule, instead, the suitors try to gain the affection of Odysseus wife which is the ultimate show of betrayal towards Odysseus. Another act of betrayal on The Odyssey is portrayed by the sailors who try to open the bag of wind thinking that they will find silver and gold in the bags. Instead they open the bag and strong winds gush out making the ships to lose their balance. This lack of trust is reflected in the quote below,

‘Nevertheless we sailed on, night and day, for nine days…but my accomplices talked and said that I was bringing silver and gold home with me, given to me by great-hearted Aiolos, son of Hippotas…and the evil counsel of my accomplices prevailed, then they opened the bag and the winds suddenly burst out…and swept and washed them over the water crying, away from their own country.’

Blancandrin clearly shows the virtue of betrayal in The Song of Roland where he make promises to save Spain through cooperation and conversion (Duggan, J. J., 1973). This is quoted below,

Blancandrin was one of the most cunning pagans, by his courage he was very much a knight: He had all the required qualities to help his lord. And he said to the King: “Don’t be alarmed! Offer the wicked and fierce Charles loyal service…”

We have therefore seen how betrayal and loyalty have been portrayed in The Odyssey and The Song of Roland. It is clear that the enemy is always within for example the suitors who wait until the King is gone for them to present themselves. Loyalty on the other hand has mostly been depicted as an obligation rather than self-will as seen in the case of the lords and vassals in The Song of Roland. Therefore it is now clear that both virtues are evident in the two works of literature.
