Assignment #1 –

Based on the ideas of innovation & invention, research an innovation that you feel has had a major impact on either American culture, the culture of another country, or the global culture as a whole. BE CREATIVE! It is not fun to read 30 papers about the cell phone, Facebook, or iTunes. Think outside the box! 1. Give a brief history about how the innovation came about- who discovered it, how did they discover it, what does it do …… pretend no matter what you innovation is that I have never heard of it. 2. Describe the impact this innovation has had on the culture you chose. Has it made society better or worse? Were there unintended consequences that could not have been foreseen at the time of discovery? 3-4 pages+ bibliography: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IN TEXT CITATIONS OR A BIBLIOGRAPHY IN MLA/APA FORMAT YOU WILL GET A “0”

Assignment #2-

You will be given the name of a film to watch during the first week of class. You only need to watch the film you are assigned. Watch the film and write a 3-4 page paper about of the film answering the three questions below: 1. What was it about (what country, what population, what was the issue)? 2. What did you learn? This is not a summary of the film. I want to know what you learned about the world, about social change. 3. How you can connect what you learned from the film to what you have learned in a class on social change? Write the first paragraph of your paper answering this question: • Do you think medical marijuana should be legal in the United States, why or why not? This part of the paper should be very brief. Watch the PBS Frontline Documentary: The Pot Republic (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-potrepublicD Write a 3-4 page paper discussing the following: 1. What role does government (state/local/federal) play in the marijuana issue in California? What are their concerns and goals? 2. What role does business play in the marijuana issue in California? What are their concerns and goals? 3. What role do nonprofits play in the marijuana issue in California? What are their concerns and goals? 4. Has your opinion of the topic changed after watching the documentary, why or why not?

Final Paper

Select a social problem or socialmovement as the primary topic of your paper. You should describe the problem (or the problem the social movement addresses) – ( e.g., Why is it a problem? What geographic area/populations does it impact-or at least which areas/populations are you focusing on? What are some of the challenges?) and then describe how this social problem is being addressed by each sector {business, nonprofit, government). Include specific examples from at least one organization in each sector where possible. You may also wish to include a description of how individual citizens address or could address the problem, or any innovative ideas you have for business, government, or nonprofits to address the problem? Make sure to bring in some of the concepts discussed in class (e.g., social change, social movements, the role of various sectors, etc.).
