Junot Diaz’s “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” is a complex novel that deals with Dominican identity and masculinity as they emerge outside the homeland, in the land of all possibilities. At the center of the novel, readers find two opposite characters, Yunior and Oscar, who bound together strongly despite their differences, and through their troubled friendship, readers are able to distinguish the real meaning of manhood in the Dominican culture, but also the flaws that are inherent to stereotypical Dominican masculinity. The novel also treats the relationship between men and women in this powerfully traditional culture, and the role of women in promoting men’s hyper-masculinity and in encouraging men’s often violent and dominating attitude. The novel suggests that Dominican machismo is outdated and harmful, and a more equilibrated masculine attitude and controlled sexuality is the key of having a fulfilling life as an adult.
