overview of approaches

Essay 1 is due this week.

Write a 500-750 word essay on one of the following topics. The word count does not include formatting or the works cited page.

· Write a critical analysis of one of the works from weeks 1 or 2. An overview of approaches can be found here, but many are quite straightforward. Psychological, gender, sociological, biographical, and historical are all approaches that many use naturally in viewing a work.

· Compare and contrast two of the stories from weeks 1 and 2. Be sure that you have isolated a strong and debatable thesis on which to build the essay. Simply pointing out the differences is not analysis. Toward that end, you may want to focus on a specific element of the stories.

· If there’s an aspect of the stories from these two weeks that particularly interests you, you may choose your own topic, but you must run it by me first to be sure it is headed in an analytical direction.

Your essay should be formatted in MLA style, including double spacing throughout. All sources should be properly cited both in the text and on a works cited page. As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your).

In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don’t forget a title. All papers should be in Times New Roman font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.

Should you choose to use outside references, these must be scholarly, peer-reviewed sources obtained via the APUS library (select Advanced Search and check the Peer Reviewed box). Be careful that you don’t create a “cut and paste” paper of information from your various sources. Your ideas are to be new and freshly constructed. Also, take great care not to plagiarize.

Whatever topic you choose you will need a debatable thesis. A thesis is not a fact, a quote, or a question. It is your position on the topic. The reader already knows the story; you are to offer him a new perspective based on your observations.

Since the reader is familiar with the story, summary is unnecessary. Rather than tell him what happened, tell him what specific portions of the story support your thesis.

Poem 1: I’m Nobody! Who are you? By Emily Elizabeth Dickinson

I’m Nobody! Who are you? Are you – Nobody – too? Then there’s a pair of us! Dont tell! they’d advertise – you know! How dreary – to be – Somebody! How public – like a Frog – To tell one’s name – the livelong June – To an admiring Bog!

Poem 2: Richard Cory by Edwin Robinson

Whenever Richard Cory went down town, We people on the pavement looked at him; He was a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim. And he was always quietly arrayed, And he was always human when he talked; But still he fluttered pulses when he said, “Good-morning,” and he glittered when he walked. And he was rich – yes, richer than a king, And admirably schooled in every grace; In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the light, And went without the meat, and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and pu

Literature Review Paper

Worth up to 20 points and 20% of course grade..

The learning outcome of this assignment is to understand how to conduct research on a given topic. Also, the outcome includes the application of your research about strategic human resources planning for your HR practice. Research and staying current on HR related topics is a critical need for an HR practitioner as is the knowledge of how to strategically plan for the Human Resources function.

For this assignment, you are asked to develop a literature review on the topic of strategic human resource management. The paper requires you to develop a short (about three to five pages) document on the current thinking and research in the area of strategic human resource management. You may include examples in your paper about how the Human Resources function creates initiatives that are strategic such as targeted recruitment, a Total Rewards program, engagement studies just to name a few, but the main focus on the paper is on the strategic nature of the Human Resource function.

You want to conduct a scholarly review of the literature, and you must have a minimum of three citations (excluding our course materials). Again, your topic is strategic human resource management but you may provide examples of strategic HR initiatives.

Review the paper provided “Writing a Literature Review Paper.” Keep in mind that a literature review is not merely a bibliographic list of resources. A literature review is your synthesis of the scholarly research available on the subject.

Your literature review can be used to inform management for decisions that are pending and/or serve as a basis for mere knowledge sharing. Literature reviews can be stand-alone documents or parts of a larger document. This assignment is to create a stand-alone literature review. Your literature review must use scholarly references and it must be written in a narrative format synthesizing the research from your citations, which must be in presented in APA format. Be sure to use topic headings such as Introduction, Main Findings and Conclusions. The paper will include at the least the following::

1.  Title page

2.  Introduction and Purpose of the Paper

3.  General Findings of the Research (including definition of the topic)

4.  Synthesis of the Findings

5.  Conclusions

6.  Reference Page

Please post your literature review in the discussion forum AND in your assignments folder

 1. In “Cathedral,” how would you describe the relationship between the narrator and his wife? Do you think their relationship will change after this experience? What do you feel is the significance of the Robert’s lack of vision?

 2. Look at Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” and explain how the quilts in the story symbolize the family’s heritage.  How do Dee and Maggie view the significance of the family’s heritage, and how is that represented by the quilts in the story?

1. Raymond Carver (1938-1988) was born in Oregon and grew up in the state of Washington.  He married at an early age, and his second child was born when he was only twenty years old.  Before pursuing a writing career, he worked several jobs to support his young family.  He returned to school, eventually receiving a degree in 1963.  Carver, some would say, was what Hemingway would have become had he not committed suicide.  Much of Carver’s style is influenced by Hemingway and the idea of minimalism.  Carver’s characters struggle in relationships, in career, and, ultimately, in life.  He himself was a recovering alcoholic who had worked as a janitor and delivery person, among other things.  His short story “Cathedral” is a good demonstration of how people have such a difficult time connecting, even with the ones they love.

2. Alice Walker (b. 1944) was born in Eatonton, Georgia.  She is the daughter of sharecroppers and grew up in poverty.  When she was a young child, she was accidentally shot in the eye while playing with her brothers.  She was self-conscious about the scars from the injury, and she became withdrawn as a result.  Reading and writing became an activity to provide comfort.  After college, she became active in the Civil Rights movement, and her experiences helped shape her writing.  Her writing became very popular, and she is a favorite of Oprah Winfrey’s book club.  She is most famous for her novel The Color Purple, which was also made into a movie.  She and Oprah discussed the importance of using old and valuable heirlooms every day on one of Oprah’s shows, an idea reflected in “Everyday Use.”   Click on the video link below to view a short video about Walker.      Embedded Video Player: Profile: Alice Walker    Profile: Alice Walker    User: Open Road Media – Added: 9/20/11  YouTube URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJR86ncuMgE     Open Road Media (2011, Sep. 20).  Profile: Alice Walker.  Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJR86ncuMgE
