  • When did you first realize there was a “racial order”? a “gender order”? a “class order”? Any others (e.g. age, sexual orientation, political attitudes, religious beliefs) that have mattered in the ways Steele describes? What did you understand to be your own location in those hierarchies?
  • Have you ever done anything like what the young black man Steele quotes who “whistled Vivaldi” in order to put white people at ease with his own presence? Have you done something to try to welcome or include someone in the position that young black man was in? How well did it work?
  • Have you ever tried to unlearn a stereotype about a population? What did you do to unlearn it? How successful do you think you were?
  • What is “stereotype threat”?  Can you think of a time when you were impacted by stereotype threat?  Share a personal example.
  • Now that you know what “stereotype threat” is, can you think of a time when you might have underperformed because of it? Were you aware that anything was amiss? If so, did you try to address the problem?

HLL is a reputed multinational company. It considers selection as an event in the total process of acquiring and developing managers. The company believes that the selection process must be consistent with other events in the total process for it to be effective. Hindustan lever has been one of the most favored companies by the prospective candidates for managerial position. The selection process of the company can be broken into three steps: such as- Screening of application forms, preliminary interview, and final selection.

Screening of Applications Forms:

In the first step the company usually receives a large number of applications for the positions advertised or through campus interview. Thereafter such applications are screened. Such applications usually contain brief information about the candidates. The selected candidates are then required to fill in a detailed application form. This form is quite elaborate and seeks factual information about the candidate and also about his attitudes and personality. A more strict screening of applications is made in this step. The company believes that to select a candidate it will not be enough to see the application forms only which may not be very reliable measure to select or reject the candidate. This calls for a brief preliminary interview to be held by company to get the best talents. So such interviews are conducted to interview as many candidates as is administratively possible.

Preliminary interview:

Preliminary interview is conducted for about ten to twenty minutes usually by one manager. During this brief personal contract, some time is spent in discussing the nature of the job, the future career possibility of the applicant and the company’s policy in this regard. Often a second interview is conducted before the applicant is rejected or selected for further consideration.

Final Selection:

Then carefully explain why the example either passes (and exceeds) the requirements of the test, or fails the test; brief or one-word answers (e.g., ‘it doesn’t work’) are not acceptable. (You are encouraged to look at examples 1-4 on pp. 151-2 as a model, but if you use Carson’s words, you must use quotation marks and cite properly.)

2. Read “Example D: A Longer Case (an Actual Case)” (pp. 153-4), then answer the following question: Was Mr. Mokarem morally obligated to do what he did?Carefully explain your reasons for thinking why or why not. Also, be sure to consider and state which of the duties that Carson discusses (1-6 on pp. 150-151) apply in this case, and what your verdict about this case implies for whether those are genuine duties or not (that is, whether they are rules we should in fact follow).
